Civilian Instructor Brian Bark (52) of 348 (Ilkeston) Sqn Air Training Corps, recently started Glider Pilot training at RAF Wittering, with the 4 Counties Gliding Club, part of the RAf Gliding & Soaring association.

Brian was awarded the 2009 Gliding bursary by the South & East Midlands Wing Retired Officers Association after selection from a list of applicants. The award, now in its third year is awarded to staff as a reward for service or achievements.

The fund has been lodged with 4 Counties GC and should be sufficient to allow Brian to go solo and gain a Glider Pilot licence. Brian joined the ATC as a cadet in September 1971.

He has been a Squadron Officer at Stapleford and Hucknall squadrons as well as a former commanding officer of 348. Cadets in the ATC also learn to fly Gliders and Cpl Leanne Perry (17) of 348 is currently on a Gliding Scholarship at 644 Gliding School at RAF Syerston, training for her licence in the Grob Vigilant .
