The Commanding Officer fifty years ago was Flt Lt George Kirk. Although in his eighties George is still fit and well and helped Rutland celebrate their birthday. Along with Sqns from Melton, Syston and Stamford they had a church service and then paraded through the streets of Oakham. The salute was taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard. Standing next to him, in one of his last duties as Station Commander of RAF Cottesmore and Rutland Squadron’s President was Group Captain Gary Waterfall.
After the parade refreshments were served at Rutland Sqn, the large birthday cake was then cut by Flt Lt Kirk (rtd) and the present Commanding Officer Flt Lt Jackie Lawrence. In his speech George said that, ‘He was pleased to see the squadron still going from strength to strength, and the cadets enjoying themselves’.
