South and East Midlands Expedition Team Conquer the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge.

Saturday 13th July saw 20 Cadets and 8 members of staff from the South and East Midlands Wing, set to the hills to confront the enormous task of completing the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge, in an attempt to raise monies towards the upcoming overseas expedition to the Spanish Pyrenees mountain range in August 2013.

Team 1

With temperatures soaring on what was the hottest day of the year to the date, the teams pushed on through with high morale and teamwork throughout the day. The challenge saw 3 teams hike over 25 miles up to 3 mountain summits, namely; Pen-y-Ghent (691m), Whernside (728m) and Ingleborough (723m). In total the teams ascended 2,142 metres! With team 1, led by Fg Off Gaskell, having the fastest time of the 3 groups, at a great 9 hours 50 minutes.

Teams 2 & 3 on their way and at the sumit

The other 2 teams both completed the challenge in just under 12 hours. This was a great achievement. The cadets performed amazingly well and the expedition was a huge success with all 20 cadets completing the challenge and raising an astounding £2,500 in sponsorship towards the trip.

The expedition team have been training for the last year to prepare them for the main expedition, which will include 2 weeks camping and walking in the Pyrenees Mountains, whilst carrying out various adventurous training activities, such as kayaking, climbing and white-water rafting along the way.

With less than 2 weeks to go to the expedition it’s safe to say that the team is ready and raring to go to Spain!
