South & East Midlands Wing have beaten off stiff competition to win the Air Training Corps’ Central & East Region Inter Wing Athletics Championship for the second year running.
In the close run battle, South & East Midlands beat Herts & Bucks Wing by just six points due to the wing’s consistency throughout the day. Although the Wing only won one Class (Class E, Junior Women) outright, high placings in all the other classes ensured a superior points tally.
Cadet Sian Lloyd-McLear broke the Region’s 200 metre record by a staggering 1.5 seconds. This was all the more creditable considering that a stiff wind persisted throughout the day.
This is yet another success for Flight Lieutenant Lynda Waplington as the Wing’s Sports Officer, having steered the Wing to a third Region Cross Country victory and gold’s in Rugby and Hockey.

“It has been a great team effort from all the cadets and supporting staff. We can only build on this success and go for our third Athletics win next year. A brilliant effort by all” said Lynda, a view echoed by Wing Commander Nigel Dickinson, the Wing’s Commanding Officer.
The event was held at the Saffron Lane Sports Stadium, Leicester and the Trophies were presented by Regional Commandant, Group Captain Brett Morrell.
