Saturday 22nd saw three Staff and the Chair from 209 (West Bridgford) Squadron attend 504 (West Nottingham) Squadron along with other Staff and members of the Civilian Committee from the Wing for the Food Safety in Catering Course.
This qualification gives you knowledge and understanding of the importance of food hygiene, associated food hazards, good hygiene practice and controls based upon an awareness of food safety management systems. Holders will know how to maintain good practice in the handling, processing and preparation of safe food. This award is on the QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework)
The course started with brief introductions from Wing Staff Officer, Squadron Leader Pass, Chris the trainer and each of the 12 candidates.
With the use of interactive powerpoint presentations the course was delivered in a series of modules, peppered with examples from Chris’ vast experience as both a caterer and trainer, with no shortage of witty anecdotes to keep the day lively whilst delivering a serious message.
Once all the course content was covered, the day concluded with a 30 question multiple choice paper exam which has now been sent for external adjudication. Each candidate must now wait for the results to come through to see if everyone has passed to be awarded the Royal Society for Public Health Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering.
As always thanks must go to 504 for their hospitality and unlimited supply of tea, coffee and biscuits!
For the Chair of 209, Angela McDonald, this was the first course she has attended within the ATC. “It was an informative day delivered in a fun and friendly environment. The timing was great for the 209 staff as there are some imminent changes in the law that will affect how we approach food safety for our upcoming Christmas camp together with future events. The means we can further ensure the safety and success of such events for all our cadets. The personal benefits for me as a member of the Civilian Committee are that I can continue to provide support for the staff and cadets on these events knowing I am qualified to do so.”
