2071 (Stamford) Squadron held an Afternoon Tea Party to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the formation of the Air Training Corps on Saturday.
Cadets, Staff and Civilian Committee members hosted former cadets from the Squadron and the Mayor of Stamford Councillor David Brailsford. During the afternoon the Squadron learned more about its history and looked through photos and memorabilia that the former members brought with them.
Former Cadets looking at old and new photographs
“Although the Squadron has quite a few photographs, we don’t have very much information about the people in them and it was great to meet so many of the people who actually appear in the pictures.” said Flying Officer Helen Gibson.
Current and Former Cadets exchange stories
One former member Mr Ken Barwell kindly presented the Squadron with the Barwell Shield for Determination. The shield had belonged to Mr Barwell when he was a cadet in the 1940’s it was carved by a German prisoner of war encamped at No.106 Stamford Prisoner of War Camp and paid for with Coffee and Cigarettes. Mr Barwell originally presented the shield to the Squadron in 1995 and to mark the 70th Anniversary of the ATC it was decided to turn the shield into an annual award for the Cadets.
