Cadets and staff from 126 (City of Derby) Squadron put on their flying suits and leather jackets this weekend for a Top Gun themed Summer Ball.
In line with the Top Gun theme, the main attractions during the evening were a 16-seat flight simulator and an inflatable beach volleyball court. Cadets could sing along to the classic Top Gun songs in a karaoke tent and the Top Gun movie played continuously in the refreshment area.
All cadets swapped their blue uniforms for the evening with either Top Gun themed fancy dress or with formal dinner suits and ball gowns. There were exceptions to the rule, including Civilian Instructor Leon Aldred, who attended the Summer Ball dressed as a Harrier jet.
Despite days of heavy rain and dark clouds looming on the night, the squadron staff laid on a fantastic barbeque.
The Summer Ball is an annual event for 126 Squadron. It is an opportunity for the Squadron to get together on a social level and promote teamwork and relationship building. The Summer Ball also proved to be the perfect backdrop for Sqn Ldr Ian Marshall to celebrate receiving the news that he had been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Sqn Ldr Marshall said, “This was a very special summer ball for me. I was able to share my MBE news with cadets, ex-cadets, staff and friends. It was a perfect end to an exciting few days”
The Summer Ball was organised by Civilian Instructor Craig Mills. Craig said, “It took a lot of effort to pull everything together for the ball. All of the hard work was worth it though. The flight simulator was amazing and the karaoke efforts were brilliant. This was probably the best summer ball we have ever held”
