Friday 10th January 2014 saw 50 cadets and 10 members of staff from 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron (Sqn) Air Training Corps(ATC) make their way to their Annual Winter Camp at Drum Hill Scout Campsite based in South Derbyshire.
This annual event is led by Pilot Officer (PO) Matt Leedham, Squadron Training Officer and runs from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. The weekend sees the cadets participating in training activities where they are given the opportunity to learn new skills such as patrolling, sentry duty and camouflage & concealment. All the skills that the cadets learn are then put to the test in practical field exercises using other staff members as actors.
On conclusion of the event, PO Matt Leedham commented: “one of the main purposes of this annual event is for the Cadets to learn a new set of team skills, develop teamwork amongst peers and promote independence, but above all to have fun”
For the cadets and members of staff of 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron the New Years camp has also been held as a Christmas Camp in previous years and is always a popular event between cadets and members of staff alike, as they get to develop their skills learnt on a parade night even further and in a totally new environment. This helps to prepare the cadets for what could be in store for them on further week long camps held at operational Royal Air Force stations later on in the year.
The Squadron would like to Thank Pilot Officer Matt Leedham for all his hard work in planning this event and making the camp possible. The cadets and the rest of the members of staff of the Squadron look forward to hosting one similar next year, which promises to continue to improve and get better year after year.
