On Sunday 8th September 2013, cadets and members of staff from 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron (Sqn) , Air Training Corps (ATC) are holding their annual open day, where EVERYONE is invited.

In recent years, this event has proven to be very popular within Swadlincote and has attracted a large number of visitors amongst our special guests, including Wing Commander N Dickinson – who is responsible for 29 Air Cadet Squadrons across Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, South Lincolnshire and Rutland.

Marion Leedham, Chair of our Squadron Support Team says: “Our preparations are well under-way and open day aims to showcase the work we do with the young people in Swadlincote and the surrounding areas.”

Our open day is mainly cadet-led and aims to highlight the positive qualities which we believe the cadets demonstrate, including: good leadership skills, good citizenship skills and a spirit of adventure.

During the day, the cadets will be responsible for running numerous displays and demonstrations to portray their many talents to family and friends. A small number of these involve “Have a go” and “Guess how many sweets are in the Jar” stalls, a Mount Snowdon treasure map, “Beat the Goalie”, a nerf shooting range and finally demonstrations around the Squadron Band, Drum Corps and a Continuity Drill Display.
As we are able to offer our cadets an exciting variety of training and activities from flying and gliding to adventure training and visits to military bases, the Squadrons media team are also producing static displays to promote the activities the Cadets have taken part in throughout the past 12 months. These include: Camps – both in the UK and overseas, The Duke of Edinburghs award scheme, projects and community work, and recent sporting events we have been extremely successful in.
Alongside this, the Squadron Support Team will also be in attendance, running an all day Barbecue, refreshment stall, tombola & spirit raffle and finally cakes and book stalls.

The open day will take place at our Squadron Headquarters in Eureka Park and also acts as an opportunity to open our doors to potential new recruits, both prospective new cadets and adult volunteer staff members. Therefore, our open day is an ideal opportunity for any young people who have been following our good progress in recent news to join us.

As an Air Cadet at 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron you will be provided with an array of skills and leadership experience to make you stand out from the crowd when you venture into the professional world, whether in civilian or military life. If you can’t make the Open Day, you haven’t missed out, as our recruiting window remains open until Tuesday 1st October 2013.
