Swimming Competition Success for Birstall Cadets
Article posted: Oct 05, 2008 by Sqn Ldr Mayoh-Smith
Cadets from 1947 (Birstall) Squadron gave a strong performance at the annual Wing swimming gala to claim 1st place in the Junior Boys class.
The gala, held on the 5th October at Beechdale pool in Nottingham, saw cadets competing from the 29 squadrons within South and East Midlands Wing in four classes, with five individual events and a relay race in each class.
All cadets from 1947 Squadron successfully completed the heats to go forward to the finals. Cadet Taylor lifted the team spirits in the first final by claming first place in the Butterfly. Later he went on to finish first in the Backstroke and Individual Medley events, while the remainder of the four strong team obtained high scoring places of their own.
With top four finishes in every event the team swept to a resounding victory in their class, scoring more than double the second placed squadron.
Flight Lieutenant Ian Rose, Commanding Officer of 1947 Squadron commented ‘I’m very proud of the whole team. They showed great determination and the overall result demonstrates what can be achieved when everyone pulls together’.
Those cadets scoring first and second places now await confirmation of selection to represent the Wing at the Central and East Region swimming championships which will be held later this month at RAFC Cranwell.
