On Thursday 16th April 2009, 1181 (Syston) Squadron held an enrolment parade and open evening, mainly for the enrolment of 18 junior cadets, 5 of which passed out as 1st class cadets, but also for the induction of the new 1181 Squadron Padre, Right Rev David White.

The parade was organised and carried out by Officer Cadet Andrew Kenyon and Cadet Flight Sergeant Michelle Reeves.

The Squadron staff were delighted by the level of support shown to the squadron, with a total of 52 guests attending. Squadron Leader Mark Richards remarked “I have never seen such a good turn-out at an enrolment evening”.

The evening began with Officer Cadet Andrew Kenyon introducing the staff and talking generally about the staffing changes that had taken place over the course of the year. He then outlined the plans for the future to allow the cadets of 1181 Squadron to have the full participation in activities available within the Air Training Corps. Parents were then asked to move towards the parade square to witness the induction of the new Padre Rev David White by Major Canon Derek Buxton and Officer Cadet Kenyon.

After a short break for refreshments the main event of the evening took place. This included a short march past, with the salute taken by Squadron Leader Richards followed by the Junior Cadets making their promises to the new Padre, leaving them to fall back into the squadron as enrolled cadets. A second march past was given to show off the new cadets of 1181 (Syston) Squadron.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Michelle Reeves commented “I am very proud of each and every cadet who took part in the parade.” Officer Cadet Kenyon, the interim OIC of 1181 Squadron, praised the turn-out at the Squadron and paid particular compliment to the efforts of Cadet Flight Sergeant Reeves. He said, “In absence of an adult SNCO, she organised and commanded the parade. She showed real maturity and ability well beyond her years. She is a credit to herself and the Squadron, demonstrating what an asset she has become to 1181.”
