On Sunday 1st February 2015, the cold and snowy weather broke into sunshine for the Air Cadets and staff of 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron as they joined with members of 1181 (Syston), 2071 (Stamford) and 2248 (Rutland) Squadrons to parade through the centre of Melton to St Mary’s Church to celebrate Air Training Corps (ATC) Sunday. Over 60 personnel lead by the Standards of the Squadrons made a grand sight through the town on the otherwise quiet afternoon.
A service followed, led by the Padre of 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron. Guests including The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Jennifer, Lady Gretton JP, the Mayor, John Wyatt, Wing Commander Dickinson and Squadron Leader Pass joined with cadets, staff, parents and members of the local community to mark this annual event celebrating the formation of the Air Training Corps on 5th February 1941.
With Leicestershire being the first area in the country to form an ATC Squadron, the link with the past and the new generations joining to take the ATC into the future was clear for all to see. Following the service, staff and cadets got the chance to meet each other and share their experiences whilst enjoying some very tasty cake for the 74th anniversary of the ATC!
