Cadet Flight Sergeant Taisiya Marsh is the only Air Cadet in the country to be selected to join the UK Cadet Rifle Team tour of the Channel Islands this year.
Flt Sgt Marsh, aged 17, is an exceptional shot. She has achieved unprecedented target rifle shooting results at such a young age. Flt Sgt Marsh’s shooting abilities were recognised at the age of 14 by 126 Squadron Shooting Officer Sergeant Ben Hirst. He encouraged Flt Sgt Marsh to become part of the squadron shooting team and her skills and interest in the sport have gone from strength to strength.
The last 12 months have been very successful for Flt Sgt Marsh. She represented the squadron in numerous competitions. Her greatest achievement was in the Inter Services Cadet Rifle Meet at Bisley. Flt Sgt Marsh came third out of the top 100 Army, Navy and Air Cadets. She was the top shot for the air cadets and won the Boulter Cup.
Flt Sgt Marsh took part in a competitive selection process at the National Shooting Centre at Bisley to gain her place on the national rifle team. She is looking forward to her tour of the Channel Islands. She said, “I’m really proud to be part of the tour. It will be a chance to meet new people and see the Channel Islands at the same time as competing in the shooting competition.”
Adult Sgt Ben Hirst said, “I was very pleased when I heard that Taisiya had been successful in gaining a place on the team. She is a very dedicated and valuable member of the squadron shooting team. I hope she will enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.”
Flt Sgt Marsh and the rest of the Derby squadron shooting team have recently scored second place in the penultimate round of the Battle of Britain national shooting competition. The team will go on to compete in the final in several weeks time.
Flt Sgt Marsh is the second cadet from 126 Squadron in recent years to compete in the UK Rifle Team annual tour. In 2008, ex-cadet Stephen Pym represented the UK in a tour of Canada.
