I was delighted to be able to escort three Cadets from Newton to compete in Region Athletics at Leicester, Saffron Lane Stadium on Sunday. The weather remained dry and we also saw some sunshine during the morning!
The atmosphere in the stadium was really special and the excitement just grew and grew as the day went on with supporters and participants from all six Wings cheering on their respective teams – I really think S&EM supporters shouted, whistled and screamed the loudest – it was great!
Cdt Richard Nespor of Newton Squadron, aged 13 ½ broke the Wing record in May for both High Jump and Shot Putt and we watched from a distance as he again won for Region these individual disciplines and gained Gold Medals. Richard now goes forward to play at Corps Athletics on 30th June. Earlier in the morning he received a Bronze Medal for the 100 metres.
Sadly the achievements at Wing level for Cdt Emily Winning and Cdt Leah Atkinson could not be repeated but it was excellent that they came and competed.
All three Cadets were presented with their Wing Blues on Monday.
At the end of the afternoon everyone waited apprehensively as the results were read out – South and East Midlands won three cups during the day and came Second overall losing by only seven points to Trent Wing.
Well done to all participants from S&EM and thanks to the organisers and helpers at the event.
