126 (City of Derby) Squadron has won the South & East Midlands Wing Athletics competition for the 12th consecutive year. 126 Squadron is the only unit to have ever won the Wing Athletics competition since the Wing was formed in 1999.
The competition took place on Sunday 8th May at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium in Leicester. The cadets from Derby delivered outstanding results on the track and field and won the competition by over 30 points. As well as walking away with the overall title, the squadron won the Youths and Junior Men trophies.
Facing stiff competition from 1211 (Swadlincote) Sqn and 1359 (Beeston) Sqn, the Derby team pulled off their best ever performance. The field events brought in vital points with cadets performing exceptionally well in the High Jump, Shot and Discus.
Sergeant Ross Keeling won the High Jump in the Junior Men category. He said, “The competition this year was hard. There were a lot of good athletes around. We knew we had to fight hard to retain our title.”
Derby’s main rivals in the competition had been training for weeks for the competition. Due to other commitments, Derby had little time to prepare this year. The team believe their victory was not down to training but dedication, determination and a team spirit that is unique to Derby. The team were cheered on by a large crowd of supporters. 126 Squadron had travelled to Leicester on a 70-seater bus to enable as many cadets as possible to attend the event.
Flying Officer Jackie Glover, Sports Officer at Derby Squadron said, “Our cadets went to Leicester to win the competition. Second place was not good enough for them. Every single cadet is proud of Derby’s sporting achievements and didn’t want to let the squadron down. On the day they pulled together, produced some outstanding results and came away with a historic victory.”
