In the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Officer Commanding South & East Midlands Wing, Wing Commander Nigel Dickinson RAFVR (T), received the OBE.
This award is in recognition of Nigel’s 40 years service to the Air Training Corps and in particular recognises the outstanding record of the South and East Midlands Wing under his leadership since being appointed Officer Commanding the Wing in 2005.
The Wing has won many championships, trophies and awards under Nigel as well as benefiting cadets with industry recognised qualifications that can be gained through facilities driven through by Nigel’s enthusiasm and energy.
The Wing continues to set high standards for both staff and cadets and is the most outstanding wing in the Central and East Region. The wing has produced the Corps’ top squadron in 2008 and 2009 and top male cadet in 2008 and 2011.
With his encouragement, the wing holds an annual Spring camp at the Defence Estates Training Facility at Swynnerton where up to 500 cadets and staff spend seven days developing skills in leadership, teamwork, survival, first aid and marksmanship. Nigel was also the driving force that enabled the wing to fly a record 200 cadets in gliders at RAF Syerston in 2009
Although having a full time job in the logistics field that takes Nigel all over the country, he still takes the time to attend all the wing competitions, events and functions. He has also established for himself a very tiring regime of visiting every one of the Wing’s 29 squadrons every three months.
